Sphero Accessories

A range of Sphero accessories for the unique ball-shaped robotic toy Sphero is a unique toy that looks like a simple ball but can be controlled remotely. I developed a number of accessories for the basic version of the toy including soft-moulded covers to increase grip and give the robot the ability to function in water. I also worked to develop a range of extra accessories to work with Sphero’s spin-off Star Wars BB8 droid toy, as well as prototyping covers and helmets to turn the off-the-shelf toy into a ‘Dark-Side BB8’.

Survey Camera

Complete “Pan & Tilt” camera system for use in pipes and other space-restricted areas. This miniature, motorised camera is one of the smallest in the world that has a remote controlled head which allows a full range of movement. It is fully waterproof, very lightweight yet robust, and contains on-board ‘hyper-bright’ LED lighting. The camera system was conceived from an initial brief and was developed through sketches, CAD modelling and prototyping into a fully complete and on-the-market product. The extremely challenging specifications demanded by the client meant that an innovative engineering solution had to be found to allow the camera to be motorised throughout 180° of pan and continuous 360° tilt within a very small overall area.

Smiley Fish Suction Placemat

Many parents have experienced messy mealtimes with little ones but this design helps to avoid spilled bowls and plates. This a simple but extremely effective idea; the bowls themselves are actually incorporated into a placemat that collects most everyday spills and crumbs. However, the real innovation is that the placemat is made in such a way that it actually grips onto the table, making it nearly impossible for children to lift up or knock over the bowls. In fact, during testing we actually lifted the entire table just using the mat, and there are no adhesives or parts involved! The mat was developed in 3D CAD before going into production and it comes in a child-friendly fish-shape, a range of colours and is oven, freezer and dishwasher-safe as well as BPA, PVC, lead and phthalate free.

Scarab Dual Lens Camera

A unique take on dual lens photography, developed in 2009-2010. The Scarab is a digital camera that addresses a number of design issues related to traditional point and shoot digital cameras which evolved from the 35mm film format. The design features two movable lenses that can be used independently for conventional pictures or for accurate self-portrait shots. Alternatively both lenses can be used together to capture panoramic images or unique 'front and back' Duo-Shot photographs. From the initially identified problem the design was developed through user testing and research. A non-visual, working prototype was constructed and visual models were developed using foam modelling, 3D printing and other techniques.

Sliding Laptop Stand

Use in the bath, on the sofa, or in bed. A multi-function tray primarily designed for using a laptop without causing problems due to overheating and blocked ventilation. This design was initially developed in CAD before 3D-printed plastic parts, and laser-cut wooden parts were combined to test the design. Following testing the design was optimised so that the frame could be efficiently CNC-milled from Aluminium and the wooden parts milled from a higher quality wood.

Capture your adventure properly by checking the picture on your wrist Action and sports cameras are becoming increasingly common. However the drive to make cameras ever-smaller and lighter has meant that many no longer feature a viewscreen. Even when cameras do have screens these are often difficult to see whilst filming, especially if the camera is mounted on a helmet, handlebars or remotely from the user. Many action cams can already connect to mobile phone screens wirelessly but this presents a different set of problems as phones are often fragile, bulky and hard to carry in filming situations. These concepts were designed to address this issue by allowing you to use a wearable screen – a watch – to get the perfect picture.

Merkaba Longboards

If it has wheels and moving parts, we’re definitely interested! A small Longboard company approached me with the goal of updating their manufacturing processes. After developing 3D models of the ideal boards, from hand-sketches and discussions I produced a range of moulds, each with slightly different characteristics in three dimensions. The two halves of each board’s mould were CNC-milled from wood to allow a faster and more accurate production process which, most importantly, was infinitely repeatable. I haven’t had the chance to ride the boards myself but all reports so far are positive!

Pinblock Instruction Manuals

A creative building toy that simplifies building sets by making every single piece exactly the same Pinblock is a new type of creative tool that is both easy to use but also has the potential for extremely complex models. Blocks can be joined and pivoted allowing a huge range of building opportunities without the need for specialist parts. Pinblock had a large number of model kits in development which all required easy to follow yet comprehensive instruction manuals. Using photographs of the models I first built virtual versions of the kits then developed a visual style for manuals that could be followed by anyone, regardless of language or background.

Raspberry Pi Robot Cases

Why do electronics enclosures have to be just boxes? I’m often approached to design standard enclosures for electronic products and PCBs but this client had something slightly different in mind. With a view to encouraging more young people to learn about electronics their idea was to produce a range of custom enclosures for popular Raspberry Pi circuitboards in the shapes of various robots. All of the body parts were designed to be interchangeable allowing a wide variety of different robots to be created, and the parts were 3D printed by the client using a multi-colour printer.

The client approached me with a very tightly-defined brief: design an LED lighting system that could fit into existing 100mm (4”) lighting cavity and drop from the ceiling, as well as giving the ability to point the lighting source in any direction.

Starsailor Live Sky Projector  

I grew up in the countryside but now live in the city and often miss perfectly clear starry nights. Starsailor allows you to recreate these, whatever the weather or light pollution. This ambitious idea immediately captured my imagination – a standalone projector that could ‘virtually’ peak through the clouds above your house and display the stars in perfect detail, straight onto your bedroom ceiling. The projector could also be connected to other devices for watching films, displaying photos or even surfing the internet. Working with a diverse team of electrical and software engineers from all around the world I built on the initial vision of the product and developed the mechanical aspects into the first working prototype. This was then used to drive a wildly successful Crowdfunding campaign that raised hundreds of thousands of dollars in funding.

Renovo Modular Water Filter System  

A modular water filter system with huge potential for expansion This concept design for a portable water filtration system was built all around the idea of flexibility and expandability. At the heart of the system are the charcoal-based filter units but these can be joined to a whole range of different modules to increase the flexibility of your setup. The modules range from direct-drinking attachments, to tubes for water bottles and bladders, and even extra bumpers to make the parts more rugged for field use. The heart of the system is a unique genderless connector which was developed specifically for this application and allows any module to connect to any other, and in any orientation.

Drinks Dispenser Concept & Pump Prototyping

An interesting mixture of conceptual and practical design. This client envisaged a line of automatic drinks dispensers which could be used either at home or in bars. In a more commercial setting these would speed up spirits-and-mixer orders as well as ensuring an accurate measure was poured every time. A conceptual design for the dispenser was produced and a small pump was designed from scratch. The pump was prototyped using 3D-printed parts, and tested to prove the concept, and demonstrate a working mechanism small enough to fit within the compact dispenser design.
