Imagine if you could control the lights in your home or office to point anywhere you wanted, all from your phone. The client approached me with a very tightly-defined brief: design an LED lighting system that could fit into existing 100mm (4”) lighting cavity and drop from the ceiling, as well as giving the ability to point the lighting source in any direction. The space available for the entire design was extremely limited but by combining three different mechanisms, and three miniature motors, I was able to produce a design that fully concertinaed into the housing but also gave the user continuous 360° movement in both the rotation and tilt directions. The detailed CAD model was developed into a fully working prototype using 3D printing and other techniques, and delivered to the client on time and budget.
